July ISlide Hero of the Month: My'Kel McMillen

This month's ISlide Hero is a young man from Boston, inspired to make a change in his community through selfless giving and relationship building. Nominated by his lifelong friend, Keandre Stanton, My'Kel 'Corey' McMillen has spent his last few years helping those in need by providing necessary items for free.

“Mack’s Soles” was born in January 2017 in honor of My'Kel's late father, Charles “Mack” McMillen. In his own words..."My father enjoyed walking no matter the distance and was always talking about having good quality shoes that were comfortable for the journey. He was someone who you could label a “giver”. If he could help anyone, he did, that was his character. It did not matter if he was at work or in the community he was that type of person. As the saying goes, “The apple does not fall far from the tree.”

I found myself helping and connecting with folks who were homeless or struggling to make ends meet like most of us. When you hear the word homeless, what comes to mind? Perhaps an individual in need of shelter, food and maybe money to help them along the way. I felt in some ways that the majority of these needs were being met, however one thing was missing… Footwear! From shelter to shelter, one corner to the other, the majority of homeless people walk to get to where they’re going.

I know that a pair of shoes is not the solution to the problem of homelessness, but maybe it is the solution to the beginning of a movement to raise awareness and to begin to build a more caring community. What do we want as a society and what do we need as a society? And that’s what I am striving to change; the mindset that we have adopted over time that has disconnected a lot of us from engaging with the real world. Mack’s Soles services in the Greater Boston Area and is always collecting donations all year round."

    What is ISlide Heroes?

    What is ISlide Heroes?

With 2019 finally here, many of us have spent the last few weeks reflecting on the great moments of 2018. Memories we shared with friends, family, co-workers, and others that made 2018 an unforgettable year. Here at ISlide, we were able to create so many new opportunities and build on existing ones that will really help launch us into our next phase. A program in particular that we are very proud to have launched in 2018 is ISlide Heroes. ISlide Heroes is our initiative dedicated to inspiring, appreciating, and honoring the special people in our lives who create memories and moments we never forget.

Every month, we encourage our customers and supporters to take the time to nominate someone they know personally, that they believe makes an incredible impact on the lives of others. Once decided we will choose a few of the applicants to receive special recognition with a pair of custom slides that include some of their favorite things and a visit from the ISlide team to give that hero the spotlight they deserve. As many of the past heroes have reflected on the experience, "I don't do this for recognition, but it does feel nice to have such a public appreciation."

So far we've met incredible professionals, inspiring kids, a loving couple, and a few men and women who make strong impacts in the lives of many and all more than deserving of being honored. As our CEO and Founder describes the program, Heroes appear in so many ways and we are all surrounded by them...these are people who epitomize our mantra of Stand In What You Stand For and it’s time we celebrate them.”

So in 2019, we challenge you to take the time, daily, to let the people in your life know how grateful and thankful you are for them.

    ISlide Heroes - Dalene Basden

In the spirit of Giving Tuesday this year, and to continue with the ongoing efforts of the ISlide Hero program, we honored an individual who was nominated by a peer of theirs for her giving nature and selflessness.

Dalene Basden, a parent of 5 children, 1 of whom was diagnosed with Klienfelters Syndrome in 1993, has been running the Lynn Special Olympics program for the last 20+ years. From the logistics of making sure the team is eligible every year, having gym space, transportation, or even feeding the athletes, Dalene has dedicated much of her time to the children and families in the community.
